Heron Island is unique because it is a small patch of sand sitting atop a coral cay. It is part of the outer Great Barrier Reef. This satellite map shows how small the island is compared
to its larger eco-system. It takes about an hour to circumnavigate the island. It is located about 75 km from the mainland near Gladstone, Queensland.
