People Stare

People Stare
I’m on display
Fair skin, brown hair
Taller than most
Western clothes.

She with the kite on her head
He with the Mao suit
Them with red and white plaid turbans
All unnoticed.

Four people on a scooter
Two men welding on the sidewalk
She washing a chicken by the curb
He peddling a tricycle of produce.

People stare
Children run
A smile and a Ni hao
Changes everything
I’m ok.

I am sure they don’t see many Westeners..

  2. Patrick says:

There are so few Westerners here, that every few days when I do see one, I ALSO stare.
